Colossi of Memnon And The Mortuary Temple

Colossi of Memnon Luxor

Interestingly, the Colossi of Memnon are all that remain of the mortuary temple of King Amenhotep III. Located at the side of the road, these incredible monuments are some of the most photographed in Luxor.

However, what many people don’t know is that these statues guarded the entrance of the mortuary temple of King Amenhotep III. It is believed that this mortuary temple was the biggest of its kind. Unfortunately much of the temple was destroyed by Ramsess II. However, what is left of the temple is slowly being uncovered.

King Amenhotep III: The Man Behind the Colossi of Memnon

Amenhotep was the son of Thutmose IV and it is though that he was born in around 1401 BC. Plus, it is believed that he became pharoah sometime between the age of 6 and 12 years and ruled Egypt from around 1386 to 1349 BC. Whilst dates are sketchy, it is believed that at about 12 years, and before he was king, Amenhotep married his principle wife Tiy. It is said that Tiy was a commoner and that this made the marriage most unusual.

King Amenhotep III: The Man Behind the Colossi of Memnon

Regardless of uncertainly about dates, King Amenhotep III was one of the greatest of the ancient Egyptian Kings. Plus his reign was generally a peaceful one. He was a great builder, with the Temple of Luxor being his greatest surviving achievement.

Amenhotep was buried in the Valley of the Kings and his tomb is the largest in the West Valley of the Kings. Plus, he has the most surviving statues of any pharaoh – over 250!
