The Monastery of Saint Paul was built in the 5th century to honour the hermit St Paul at Thebes. The monastery consists of three churches. The main church is the church of Saint Paul, which was constructed around the cave where St Paul lived. The church includes altars, candles, ostrich eggs (symbol of resurrection), and a range of decorative wall art.
