Once upon a time Cairo Marriott Hotel & Omar Khayyam Casino was a royal palace! It opened in 1869 on Zamalek Island as a guest house for dignitaries attending the opening of the Suez Canal that year. The opulent rooms have seen many royal parties. Cairo Palace was converted into a hotel in the 1960s.
The Old Cataract in Aswan sits high above the Nile river and overlooks Elephantine Island. You can sip cocktails or take afternoon tea on the riverside terrace and admire the Moorish architecture. Princess Diana and Queen Noor of Jordan are amongst the royals who have stayed here.
The Auberge Fayoum is located in the oldest city in Egypt amongst the tranquil everglades and Lake Fayoum. Built as a hunting lodge and lakefront retreat for Egypt’s King Farouk. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Saudi Arabian monarch Abdulaziz Ibn Saud met here in 1945.
