Tomb of Queen Meresankh III
The tomb of Queen Meresankh III is definitely one of the Giza Plateau hidden gems! This intruiguing tomb was discovered right at the end of the excavation season in 1927. The excavation team were actually surveying an area to help to prepare for the season’s work. They just happened a small door in the wall of a tomb! The doorway was completely filled with sand an other debris. The archeologist cleared just enough of the debris to take a look inside the tomb. They immediately knew that had made a rather special discovery.
The photographs above were taken by the original archaeologists who uncovered the Tomb of Queen Meresankh from the sand that had filled the entrance for several thousands of years. With thanks to Digital Giza Educational Resources.
Having entered the tomb, the archeologists recorded that the wall paintings in the tomb were almost perfectly preserved. Remember, these had been created over 4,500 years ago! From the paintings, it was easy for the team to identify the tomb’s owner, Queen Meresankh III. The granddaughter of Khufu, who built the Great Pyramid on the Giza Plateau.
