The terraced, sandstone complex is a masterpiece! However, Thutmose III removed all images of Hatshepsut after her death. In addition, dedications to her daughter, Neferure, were removed from the walls of the complex. Also, the temple was rededicated. Fortunately for all of us, the work of Thutmose III was incomplete. As a result, much of the temple’s original glory remains visible today. Plus some amazing restoration projects have taken place. Restoration continues today.

Hatshepsut the pharaoh

Hatshepsut Mortuary Temple

Hatshepsut, the daughter of pharaoh (Thutmose I). Plus the queen wife of her half brother, Thutmose II. Her stepson was appointed heir after her husband died in 1479 B.C. Uniquely Hatshepsut undertook the role of regent for the young king. Eventually Hatshepsut declared herself pharaoh. In addition, she portrayed herself in pictures as a man. Including showing herself with a male body and false beard. Also, Hatshepsut claimed the god Amun as her father.

As a woman, Hatshepsut couldn’t lead her soldiers in battle. As a result, she changed focus. The perfect solution was a trading expedition to the fabled land of Punt. No Egyptian had been to Punt for 500 years! Therefore, Punt was strategically important. Whatsmore, Punt was located along the southern shore of the Red Sea.
