Hatshepsut was the daughter of one pharaoh (Thutmose I) and queen wife of another (her half brother, Thutmose II). When her husband died in 1479 B.C. her stepson was appointed heir, with Hatshepsut undertaking the role of regent for the young king. Eventually Hatshepsut declared herself pharaoh. She portrayed herself in pictures as a man, with a male body and false beard, and claimed the god Amun as her father. As a woman, Hatshepsut couldn’t lead her soldiers in battle so she changed focus and sent them on a trading expedition to the fabled land of Punt. Punt was located along the southern shore of the Red Sea, where no Egyptian had been for 500 years.
